Course Description:

In this course, students will learn the critical thinking and writing skills necessary to prepare and present a research study on a selected topic. Lessons include the focused literature review, quantitative and qualitative approaches to research, and the research process. Concerns regarding ethical standards of research and confidentiality will also be covered.

Required Text and Learning Materials:

  • Required: The APA Publication Manual, 6th Edition.
  • Any textbook on English grammar and composition.
  • Any textbook on writing research studies that includes both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Course Objectives:

  • Review and develop writing skills in persuasive and argumentative writing.
  • Compare and contrast examples of inductive and deductive logical fallacies.
  • Conduct a limited literature review on a selected topic.
  • Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research methods.
  • Analyze differences among quantitative research designs.
  • Apply qualitative research designs to various research conditions.
  • Describe appropriate and ethical data gathering procedures available in research.
  • Select appropriate processes for data analysis for various research designs.

Students will be assessed on their written assignments and tests. Students will participate in forum discussions covering topics from the lectures.


Students have twelve weeks to complete this course.
